Looking for a unique South African experience?
Visit Oudtshoorn, a Klein Karoo town at the far end of Route 62. Where else can you encounter meerkats, crocodiles and ostriches in one place? Oudtshoorn is also home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system. If you’re interested in local flora, this historical town is located near an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent Karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge. You’ll also enjoy breathtaking scenic drives alongside the impressive Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.
Oudtshoorn has become synonymous with ostriches and benefited from two booms. During the first boom in the late 1870s, a pair of ostriches would fetch as much as R12 000, which is more than they would fetch today.
It would seem that feathers for fashionable boa neckwear (named after the snake) were then deemed more valuable than cholesterol-free meat is now although a recent outbreak of avian ‘flu has threatened the industry once again.
